Good Practices for Making a Civilized Argument

In any discussion, whether professional, academic, or personal, how we argue is just as important as what we argue. A civilized argument cultivates understanding, respects differing views, and moves discourse forward. Here are some of the essential practices for maintaining civility and effectiveness when making an argument:
  1. Base Your Claims on Factual Evidence

    • Avoid generalizations or vague assertions. A strong argument begins with verifiable data, credible sources, and real examples. Rather than saying, “This never works,” support your point with scriptural evidence, research findings, case studies, or statistics that reinforce your position.
  2. Address Opposing Views Thoughtfully

    • Acknowledge the other side. This shows intellectual maturity and builds credibility. Counter opposing claims not with disdain but with well-reasoned rebuttals rooted in logic and fact. This demonstrates that your argument can withstand scrutiny. Uphold brotherly love, good faith and Honour of God.
  3. Distill Complex Points

    • Effective communication lies in clarity. Break down complex ideas into simple, digestible points. Structure your argument logically, with each point building on the previous one. Use bullet points or concise examples to emphasize clarity. Avoid scattering your thoughts all over the place. Be organized.
  4. Avoid Emotional Manipulation

    • Arguments lose credibility when laced with emotional bias, guilt-tripping, or personal attacks. Avoid using loaded language or appealing to fear, anger, or pity to force agreement. This not only weakens your argument but also alienates your audience.
  5. Listen Actively and Respond Respectfully

    • Civility involves listening to understand, not just to respond. Give others space to present their views and ask clarifying questions if needed. Avoid interrupting or misrepresenting what others say. This sets the stage for a respectful, two-way exchange.
  6. Stay on Topic

    • Derailing a discussion with unrelated points or distractions weakens the argument. Stick to the issue at hand and avoid drawing in unrelated grievances. A focused argument is a powerful one.
A civilized argument doesn’t seek to defeat an opponent; it seeks to advance understanding.
