70-Week Prophecy

Chief

Chief of Sinners.
Imagine a 500-year-old prediction pinpointing the exact timeline of Jesus’ life, death, and the spread of Christianity. Sounds impossible? Yet the Bible’s 70-week prophecy in Daniel 9 does just that—and it’s one of the most jaw-dropping examples of divine foresight.

A 490-Year Countdown to Redemption

At first glance, Daniel 9:24–27 sounds cryptic: “Seventy weeks are decreed… to put an end to sin and to atone for wickedness.” But for Bible scholars, these verses are a masterclass in prophecy. Adventists, like many historicist interpreters, see this as a literal 490-year timeline (70 weeks x 7 days/week = 490 days = 490 years).

Why 490 years?
It’s all about the day-year principle—a key to unlocking biblical prophecy. Just as the Israelites wandered 40 years for 40 days of doubt (Numbers 14:34), each “day” in prophetic time equals a literal year. So, 70 weeks (490 days) = 490 years.

The Countdown Begins: Rebuilding Jerusalem

The prophecy starts with a royal decree to rebuild Jerusalem. But which decree?
  1. 538 B.C.: Cyrus allows Jews to rebuild the temple (Ezra 1).
  2. 457 B.C.: Artaxerxes empowers Ezra to restore Jerusalem’s laws and governance (Ezra 7). This “full restoration” decree kicks off the 490-year clock.
Fast-forward 483 years (69 weeks) to…

A.D. 27: The Messiah Arrives

Right on schedule, Jesus is baptized and anointed by the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22). Daniel’s prophecy called this moment “Messiah the Prince”—the start of Jesus’ ministry.

Three and a half years later…

A.D. 31: The Ultimate Sacrifice

In the middle of the final “week” (7 years), Jesus is crucified, “cut off, but not for Himself” (Daniel 9:26). His death:
  • Ends animal sacrifices: The temple veil tears, signaling direct access to God (Matthew 27:51).
  • Fulfills the covenant: Jesus becomes the final sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 10:12).

A.D. 34: The Gospel Explodes Beyond Israel

The last “week” ends with Stephen’s martyrdom (Acts 7), sparking persecution that scatters Christians—and the gospel—to the Gentiles. This fulfills Daniel’s vision of “sealing up vision and prophecy” and confirms the shift from Israel to a global church (1 Peter 2:9).

Why This Prophecy Matters Today

While the 70 weeks ended in A.D. 34, they’re part of a bigger puzzle: the 2,300-day prophecy (Daniel 8:14).
  • 457 B.C. to A.D. 1844: The 2,300-year timeline ends with Christ entering the heavenly sanctuary’s Most Holy Place—a final atonement before His return.
  • Cleansing of sin: Just as Old Testament priests cleansed the earthly sanctuary, Jesus now prepares to eradicate sin forever (Hebrews 9:23–28).

Confidence for the Future

Daniel’s prophecy isn’t just history—it’s a roadmap to hope. It proves:
  1. Bible reliability: Precise predictions validate Scripture’s divine origin.
  2. God’s faithfulness: If He kept His word about Jesus’ first coming, He’ll fulfil His promise to return.
The same God who orchestrated history is preparing eternity. As we near Christ’s second coming, Daniel’s 70-week prophecy reminds us: Every detail is in His hands.

As important as this prophecy is to traditional SDA people, how come I was banned for preaching for 2 years when I preached on the theories of faith presented by Marion Berry way back in 1992 at Sonoma College as a missionary. Nobody never told me the theories of faith as Marian Berry presented, the wife of a famous SDA Pastor was heresy. In fact I cannot find anywhere on the earth the 10 CD set attached to the Walter Veith Onslaught Set, a volume of 40 CD that I watched for hours and hours for 2 weeks, from a friend I borrowed the set from way back in 1985. How come her material is not regarded by the Church anymore?

In fact even elder SDA teacher Dave Westbrook in his Back to Enoch website, preaching Out of the Cities message is also no more. You cannot find his messages anywhere. They are gone. So currently there is no SDA person willing to detail the end time events about to unfold before us. And what would it matter, since the COV19 scare the SDA church was disappointing to say the least. We did not protect our people, but let them to their own, so many of us got jabbed. What a stupid tragedy that was.

My question to the SDA at large is why are we afraid to study the Scriptures like we used to, the people of the book?

Shalom

I am not sure the premise for your banning, those who pronounced the banning should have highlighted why they prohibit you from preaching.

I agree with you that the Church has really toned down, especially on the prophecy.

Why aren't we allowed to preach things we are uncertain of?
Personally, I wouldn't encourage anyone to preach things they are uncertain of.
Does anybody have any details on the end of time coming before us?
Christ says none but the father knows the day and the time. However, Christ left us with the signs of the time to tell us when His coming draws near (Mathew 24: 14 - And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.)
Are you familiar with Marian Berry comments on Mrs White Daniel 12 prophecies?
I am not familiar with Marian's commentaries.

Pity Chief, it seems the Masons want to remove the 10 DVD set where Marian Berry preached about the EGW statements on Daniel 12.

You say" Personally, I wouldn't encourage anyone to preach things they are uncertain of.

I hear Pastors preach of salvation in Jesus but do not define genuine faith properly?

Technically we know little about salvation at all, Paul calls it a mystery. Shalom
